前立腺は、男性の膀胱の下にあるクルミ大の腺です。 この腺は、精子と混ざって精液を形成する液体を作っています。 前立腺は尿道（膀胱から体外に尿を運ぶ管）を取り囲んでいるため、前立腺が腫れたり大きくなったりする疾患は、尿道を圧迫して痛みや排尿障害を引き起こすことがあります

前立腺炎は前立腺の炎症です。 急性前立腺炎は、突然の症状発現をもたらす前立腺の炎症です。 急性前立腺炎は、通常、尿道を伝って前立腺に侵入する細菌による感染症が原因です。 これらの細菌の中には、体内や体外に生息する通常の細菌も含まれます。 その他の感染症は、性的接触によって感染します。
