The “family is” or the “family are”?

Collective nouns are words that describe groups of people or things, e.g. “family” or “team”. Grammatically they are singular, but as they describe more than one individual, they may also take the plural form of a verb or use a plural pronoun.

For example, do we say “The family is arriving tomorrow” or “The family are arriving tomorrow”?

非常に一般的に、イギリス英語では集合名詞は一般的に複数形として扱われます。

単数形か複数形かの使い分けは、グループ内の個人を強調するか、1 つのエンティティとしてのグループを強調するかにもよります。

以下の例では、単一実体としての集合体よりも、集合名詞の個々のメンバーを強調しています：

管理委員会は互いに合意することができなかった。
チームは一人、二人とゲートを通って歩いていた。

これらの例では、集合名詞を1つの実体として強調しています：

管理委員会は同意を与えた。
The staff accepts the new arrangements.

例外：

警察-常に複数形をとる： “Police are…”.

Number – “a number of “というフレーズを使って「いくつか」という意味を表す場合は、複数形を使います。
例：A number of options were presented.
A number of students have fallen ill.

「the number」を「the amount」の意味で使う場合は、単数形を使います。
例：The number of protestors was astonishing.
The huge number of people arriving at the event has taken the organisers by complete surprise.

「the number」を「the number」の意味で使う場合は、単数形を使います。
